The Government of Tamil Nadu has recently introduced a new avenue to finance the schooling and education infrastructure in the state. The Principal Secretary to the School Education Department, Tamil Nadu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Foundation, a Tamil association in the United States. The MoU will establish a publicprivate partnership between the state and domestic and overseas institutions. The Tamil Nadu Foundation will invest funds regularly in the project towards the development of education infrastructure in the state. Apart from monetary assistance, the foundation will also provide its expertise in the field of education, leveraging its 35 years of experience in the domain.
Prior to signing the MoU, the government of Tamil Nadu and the TNF had signed a publicprivate partnership agreement which allowed both organisations and individuals to adopt a school. The adopter could contribute by providing funds for furniture, computers, libraries, laboratories, and building and classroom infrastructure. Furthermore, the MoU will facilitate channeling of funds into purchasing uniforms, stationery, computers and laboratories and renovation and infrastructure development activities. The MoU has a validity period of five years, and may be renewed for a further two years.
