The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has awarded a construction contract to Va Tech Wabag Ltd, a well-known water-treatment company. The contract involves the construction of a sea water desalination plant in Nemmili, Tamil Nadu. With a capacity of 100 million litres per day, this would be the largest of its kind in the country. To accomplish the construction and other tasks associated with the project, Va Tech Wabag undertook a 70:30 joint venture with IDE Technologies, an Israeli core desalination firm.

The company will operate and maintain the plant for a period of seven years. Moreover, a capital of Rs 533 crore will be sanctioned by the Central Government towards the project. The construction activities have been scheduled to commence in a month’s time and will be completed within the next two years. Apart from the Nemmili plant, the construction of another desalination plant has been planned for Chennai. This desalination plant construction project will cost around Rs 1,033 crore, and will function on a Design, Build and Operate (DBO) basis. The plant will be developed over a sprawling 40 acres of land allocated by the government on the East Coast Road. |
