The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has officially stated that the country has achieved its target of constructing nine km of roads daily. The ministry also announced that the next target of 12 km road construction per day will be achieved by April 2010. However, to achieve such a target, there must already be 20,000 km of work in progress.

At present, the government is in talks with Malaysian authorities, to invite Malaysian players into the highway construction sector in India. Around 35 Malaysian firms are already engaged with different infrastructure and construction projects in India. Along this line of development, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways planned to award contracts worth $20 billion during November 2009 and June 2010, targeted towards infrastructure development in India. However, to ensure progressive construction activities and projects, the central government has emphasised the role of the state governments in land acquisition. The latest reports also reveal that big infrastructure contracts will only be awarded to large builders and developers. This is to leverage their huge resources, which will ensure smooth running of projects and timely accomplishment. |
