49.5-MW Wind Farm for Tamil Nadu

Wind farm operator Indian Energy has tied up with Chennai-based turbine manufacturer ReGen Powertech to construct a 49.5-MW wind farm at Theni, Tamil Nadu. A 20-year power purchase agreement with the Tamil Nadu electricity board for the sale of power from the project has been considered. Land for construction has been secured and work on the first phase is expected to start in December 2009, with commissioning slated for June 2010.

The first phase consists of the installation of 11 turbines of 1.5 MW capacity each, with a total generating capacity of 16.5 MW. For this, Indian Energy has signed a turnkey construction contract with ReGen. Indian Energy has signed an expansion option with ReGen for the second phase. This will consist of 22 turbines of 1.5 MW each and a total capacity of 33 MW. Construction is hoped to commence in the second quarter of 2010, and the extension will be fully commissioned by December 2010. The project will be developed under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol and is expected to generate around 120,000 Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) per annum. An in-principle approval is awaited from the State Bank of India for project finance.
