Bandra–Worli Sea Link now open

After being in the pipeline for nine years, the Bandra–Worli Sea Link that promises to cut a 40-minute ride between the two Mumbai suburbs to just 7 minutes has finally opened. Constructed by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), the 5.6-km sea link is only a third of the Western Freeway Project that aims to connect the city’s western coast with high-speed corridors all the way to its southern tip.

The two other arms expected to be constructed soon, will connect Worli to Haji Ali and the latter to Nariman Point. These two projects are central to addressing the traffic congestion in the island city. Despite much delay in the tendering of the Worli–Haji Ali Sea Link, bids have now been received but a decision on the contract is still pending. Plans for the Haji Ali–Nariman Point sea link have not been
articulated yet.
