Construction work on the 45-km Chennai Metro Rail Project has begun and is expected to conclude by 2015. Estimated at Rs 14,600 crore, the Metro Rail Project will be constructed with a contribution of Rs 13 crore from the Centre. The State Government has already allocated Rs 550 crore for the project and is expected to supply more capital if required.

The project comprises of two phases. In the first phase, two corridors with a combined length of 45 km would be constructed. The first corridor would run from Washermanpet to the Airport via Anna Salai for a 23.1 km stretch, of which 14.3 km would be underground. The second corridor would take a 22-km route from Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount, via Koyambedu, with 12.3 km of its length elevated and the rest underground. |
