Indian interior designing industry set to rock

Diverse scope of interior designing has led to the emergence of several specialised micro-disciplines such as residential design, corporate design, retail design and hospitality design

Gone are the days when interior designing in India would usually point to the traditional décor of an average Indian home, comprising marble or mosaic flooring, coloured walls adorned with local crafts and colonial furniture. After traversing many distraught miles, interior designers have succeeded in adding new dynamics to the concept, although it was restricted to the elite class till 1980s.

Today, the interior designing market is recognised as an independent field and is fast catching up among the natives. General public, too, feel the same way, as has been reflected in a recent poll conducted by Constructionbiz360, where a whooping 100% answered in the affirmative.

“Over the last 3-4 years, the interior designing sector in India registered significant growth primarily because of the increasing influx of multinational companies (MNCs). Growing economy, rising disposable income, housing sector boom and the willingness among the country’s younger generation to enrich their lifestyle are the various other drivers that contributed to the sector’s growth,” says Vipin Chutani, managing director of Synergy Corporate Interiors Private Limited, a reputed interior designing firm in New Delhi.

Mr Chutani is also optimistic about the sector’s future prospects and adds that the Indian interior designing market is likely to witness an upward movement over the coming 5 years.

Emergence of micro-disciplines

Interior designing is an art to beautifully decorate any living space within an enclosed structure. Such diverse scope has led to the fragmentation of the sector into several specialised micro-disciplines, namely residential design, corporate design, retail design and hospitality design.

Witnessing recovery

The slump in the construction industry, especially the real estate sector, adversely affected the interior designing sector. “During the global economic recession, the interior designing industry witnessed a minimum of 10% slowdown as real estate projects got delayed or were shelved,” says Sundeep Gupta, president of Association of Architects, Builders, Interior Decorators and Allied Business (ABID).

On the brighter side, the interior designing industry is poised to register 35-40% growth this year. Going forward, with the realty sector expected to witness impressive growth over the coming years, the interior designing market in India is set to rock.
