The Government of India (GoI) recently set up an expert committee to preserve the architectural heritage of Chandigarh. The committee will focus on the maintenance of public buildings of historic importance, especially those which are over 50 years old. The committee will comprise representatives from various ministries such as Culture, Urban Development and Home Affairs. The committee is expected to submit its report, along with the recommendations, within a period of three months.
The Central Government took this decision following reports from residents about relaxations in adherence to building norms, resulting in the dilution of the city’s original character. One recent case was the administration’s decision to allow the conversion of the land use of plots in the industrial area from industrial to commercial. This raised a public outcry from citizens, who say that celebrated architect Le Corbusier, specifically placed the industrial area in a corner of the city. Residents feel that the city’s administration has been lenient during the past five years, and has allowed unjustified relaxations in the standard building norms.
