Architecture Meets Ecology at Ecoweek 2010

Registration has begun for Ecoweek 2010: Ecology + Community + Architecture, to be held in Athens from March 13–20, 2010. The conference will explore passive solar and ecological building technologies and take a look at sustainability in communities. The event is directed at architects, young architects and architecture students, engineers and environmental engineers and will feature lectures and design workshops. The conference is supported by the European Institute of Law, Science and Technology and the City of Athens. The thematic lectures will be given by experts from global consulting firms ARUP and Buro Happold, as well as UK-based Sustainable Cities/CABE.

The design workshops will be hosted in Athens, in 20 architectural offices. For three days, participants will learn the application of green building principles in small groups in firms, under the guidance of established architects. The subject is the design of a zero-emission passive-solar house. Some lectures by eminent personalities from the architecture and urban planning realm will also be open to the general public. An interactive workshop and a visit to ecological buildings in Larisa have also been planned, along with the screening of documentaries such as Taking Root: the Vision of Wangari Mathai, The Garden and The 11th Hour.
