CBRI Recommends Fire Safety Measures for SGPGI

After a fire broke out at Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Science (SGPGI) this month, the hospital administration decided to bring on board experts from the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) to upgrade the building’s fire-fighting measures. A special committee constituted by the hospital administration to examine the incident submitted its report, recommending structural changes in the thirty-year-old building. Effective upgradation measures will be undertaken to ensure that, in the event of a fire in any part of the hospital, the damage is confined to that area and does not spread. The present structure has connected service ducts that allow smoke to spread to other parts of the building, except for the emergency ward. Area wise isolation has been recommended to ensure fire control. Additionally, the committee has also recommended extra entry and exit points to prevent stampedes in case of emergencies. Keys for the exit doors will be placed nearby in glass cases, so that people can directly break the case to use them when required.
