Beeston Church Restoration wins award

The redevelopment and restoration of the Beeston Parish Church in Nottinghamshire has received the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards in the East Midlands Conservation category. The project, worth £860,000, was lauded in the award ceremony. The scheme, designed by Derby-based architects Lathams, completely replaced the dark and outdated interior of the church and created a brightly lit space for worship and community use.

The existing pews, electric organ, choir stalls, false organ pipes and flooring were removed, and the stonework and ceiling were cleaned. Junckers oak boarded floor with underfloor heating was installed and Early English stone font was relocated in the centre of the nave. A new dias containing a removable sectional communion rail was built in the east end of the nave. A new lectern, altar table and three ceremonial chairs were specially commissioned in ebony and oak. Built-in furniture was designed in a consistent and unobtrusive simple
style in oak and oak veneer. Low-energy lighting and electronic controls with scene-setting technology were used to highlight the bright open spaces and stone features, walls and ceilings. Lathams redesigned the former choir vestry (the storage room for vessels and vestments in the church) and organ chamber area by installing a new first floor as the Sunday school room and meeting area. In the west end, a new storage, kitchen cupboards and toilet facilities were incorporated within the entrance porch at the base of the bell tower.
