The Ministry of Rural Development has released grants-in-aid worth Rs 125,00,00,000 (Rs 125 crore) to the Tamil Nadu Rural Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TNRHIDC) for construction of rural roads in the state under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The sum is the first installment of Phase VII of the grants-in-aid to the TNRHIDC, the state-level autonomous agency responsible for implementing works under PMGSY in Tamil Nadu.
PMGSY, a 100% centrally-sponsored scheme, is responsible for improving connectivity to all rural areas in the country. PMGSY aims at providing good all-weather road connectivity to rural areas having a population of 500 people and above and also to the hill states, tribal areas and desert areas, having a population of 250 people and above.
