INDIA SHOWS ITS STEEL

The Metal Buildings & Steel Structures Expo 2010 showcases world-class technology and products in the steel industry, reports Times Journal of Construction and Design

Touted as one of India’s biggest events on steel structures and allied products, the Metal Buildings & Steel Structures Expo 2010 (MBSS’10) was held by INIS Enterprises at the Auto Cluster Exhibition Centre, Pune, from June 3–5, 2010. The expo showcased the latest products and innovations in this industry.

The two-day expo was accompanied by a conference on the theme “Steel Structures in India—Exploring Opportunities”. This focused on the challenges and opportunities in the steel sector and how these have been addressed by leading players in the industry.

The topic of pre-engineered building systems (PEBs) was in the limelight. The PEB revolution in India, the current PEB trends and the diversification of opportunities in the segment were discussed at length, along with an illustrated case study of the growing overlap between conventional steel structures and PEBs.

The key topics covered in the conference catered to structural steel fabrication business models, structural steel demand drivers, supply scenario, costs and penetration. A high-level panel discussion debated the future of structural steel in India and its newer applications.

MBSS is an initiative designed to promote the use of steel and allied metals in construction. It serves as a platform to showcase the latest products & innovations in the industry and opening new vistas of exploring business opportunities as well as dissemination of knowledge in the quest to deliver world class technology/services.

Representatives from the leading players in the industry such as JSW Severfield Structures Ltd, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd, Tata Power Ltd, Tata Steel and Acecad Software addressed challenges and new prospects in the field while Deloitte functioned as a knowledge associate for the event.

The conference saw overwhelming support from prominent national and international companies like Bentley Systems Singapore, Kirby India and L&T ECC, besides many others.

The second edition of MBSS, a sequel to its first edition that registered phenomenal success last year in Chennai in terms of footfalls and business deals, continued its effort to integrate steel and allied metals not only in the infrastructure/industrial projects but also in high risebuildings segment.

Yogesh Behl, Mayor, PCMC, inaugurated the expo in the presence of Anshul Singhal, President (Commercial), JSW Severfield Structures Ltd, and Suresh Athavale, Professor (Building Technology), BN College of Architecture for Women, Pune.

The event saw participation from several related segments—metro rail, seaport authorities, primary/secondary steel suppliers, project management companies, developers, steel fabricators, engineering project contractors (EPC) and government organisations participating by way of taking up stalls or as business visitors or delegates to the conference.

The expo was a perfect networking forum for the steel structures industry, giving them an opportunity to meet exhibitors, clients and industry experts.

Sadia Shaikh, CEO- INIS Enterprises, highlighted that MBSS’10 achieved its purpose of exploring solutions to longstanding key issues in the steel structures segment. He said that they will now be looking forward to putting up a much bigger and better show in the next edition, which is planned for the year 2011.
