Vidler Water Company Plans to Build Solar Farm in Nevada

Vidler Water Company, a US-based private-sector water resources firm, has announced plans to develop a solar farm that would be the biggest of its type in the country. Fish Springs Ranch in Reno Nevada has been finalised as the location for the solar farm. The company had purchased the 2,670-acre ranch in 2,000 to construct a pipeline. Initially around 200 acres of land will be used to build the 20-MW farm. In later stages, the company plans to expand the farm over 1,000 acres of ranch land.

The primary motive for the solar farm would be to power Vidler’s water pumps, while the remaining electricity will be sold to NV Power. This will help it become compliant with regulations which mandate that by 2015, 20 per cent of power should be obtained from renewable energy sources. However, despite the company’s aggressive planning, it still has to obtain a special permit from the Washoe County Planning Commission, Nevada before beginning any construction on the farm.
