China Committed to Back Port Building Project in Kenya

Mwai Kibaki, the President of Kenya, recently stated that the Chinese government has made a commitment to provide assistance in building a Kenyan port. The plan for the port—to be constructed at Lamu on the northeastern coast— was earlier proposed in April 2008. The new port will be bigger than Kenya’s existing port at Mombasa. According to the latest updates from the country’s Ministry of Transport, the project will cost the Kenyan government around $22 billion and involve the construction of a railway line, three airports and a highway linking Ethiopia, Southern Sudan and Rwanda to the airports.

The Kenyan President’s statements with regard to Chinese support have come after talks with Yang Jiechi, the Chinese Foreign Minister, who is on a six-nation tour of Africa and the Middle East. Though China’s extent of involvement in the port development project has not been finalised as yet, recent statements indicate that China is planning to invest more in infrastructure projects in Kenya. China has already provided Kenya with a KES 540 million grant. The capital will be used to back various projects in Kenya.
