Bridge Work for Everglades Water Restoration Commences

The largest construction project in the history of the American National Park Service, a $81 million project to restore fresh water flows to the Everglades has now commenced in the Tamiami Trail. The Tamiami Trail is a filled roadbed that cuts across the Everglades and obstructs water movement and wildlife. The planned bridge intends to modify the roadway to allow more fresh water inflow through Everglades National Park and into Florida Bay, while maintaining vehicular traffic between Naples and Miami. The contract for works such as constructing the bridge and raising and reinforcing 9.7 miles of the trail was awarded by the Army Corps of Engineers.

As a prominent component of the Modified Water Deliveries Project, the bridge will restore natural water flow to Northeast Shark River Slough, a portion of Everglades National Park added by Congress in 1989. Planning has already commenced on forthcoming projects intended to raise the roadway. The endeavour is expected to increase the flow of fresh water into Taylor Slough and eastern Everglades National Park by more than 70 per cent. Subsequent projects to improve the Southern Everglades ecosystem include the Picayune Strand Restoration Project in Southwest Florida and the C-111 N Spreader Canal Project that will benefit Florida Bay.
