A foundation-laying ceremony was held by the school’s developer Delta Group for the Yang Jiazhen Delta Sunshine Primary School in Sichuan, China. The first solar-powered primary school built after the Sichuan earthquake disaster in 2008 is scheduled for completion by spring 2010. The design proposal, which won the 2009 Delta Cup International Solar Building Design Competition, hopes to enhance air circulation within the building while saving money. Thermal buffers have been mounted on the roofs of classrooms, offices and dormitories, and compound walls have been created for the building’s facade to improve insulation. The skylights installed will improve ventilation for rooms on the top floors to keep the air cool and breezy in the summer months. A central solarpowered water heating system will provide warm and boiled water to the boarding students and those in the cafeteria. On completion, the school is expected to house 800 students. |
