Russia to help Belarus build nuclear reactor

Russia has agreed to financially assist the construction of a nuclear reactor in Belarus by contributing $9 billion. In addition, it will also provide engineering and technological support. Starting in 2010, the project is expected to be ready by 2018.



Atomstroeksport, Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company would play the general contractor while other Russian and Belarusian firms would act as sub-contractors. The project will be planned and designed by Rosatom, the communist giant’s state-owned nuclear station design bureau. The project will be located in the Grodno province in Belarus, for which land surveys have considerably progressed. An agreement between the two nations will be signed in September.
